Privacy Policy

Last updated: May 7, 2026

Subtext ("we", "our", "the app") is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what data we collect, why we collect it, and how we handle it.

The short version

Your conversations stay on your device. We do not store, sell, or share your text content. The only data that leaves your phone is the text you choose to decode — and only momentarily, to send to our AI provider.

Data we collect

1. What you decode

When you tap "Decode" on a conversation, the text content is sent to our AI provider (Anthropic's Claude API) to generate the analysis. This text is not stored by Subtext on any server.

How long Anthropic stores it: Per Anthropic's privacy policy, API requests are not used for model training. Anthropic retains content per their own retention policy, typically 30 days for safety review, then deleted.

2. Decode history

Your decoded conversations and results are stored only on your device using Apple's SwiftData framework. They never leave your phone unless you back up your device to iCloud (an Apple feature, not Subtext).

You can delete your history at any time in Settings → Privacy → Delete History.

3. Subscription & purchases

Subscriptions are managed by Apple's App Store and our processor RevenueCat. We receive only:

We do not see your Apple ID, email, name, payment method, or transaction amounts.

4. Diagnostic & crash data

If the app crashes, anonymized crash logs are sent to Apple's crash reporting system (standard iOS behavior). We use these to fix bugs. They do not contain conversation content.

5. Photos library access

If you choose to upload a screenshot, Subtext requests access to your photo library. Selected images are processed on your device using Apple's Vision framework for text extraction. We do not upload your photos to any server.

Data we do NOT collect

Sharing your data

We do not sell, rent, or share your data with anyone, with these limited exceptions:

Children's privacy

Subtext is rated 12+ on the App Store. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has used Subtext without parental consent, please contact us at the address below.

Your rights

You have the right to:

EU / UK / California users

If you reside in the EU/EEA, UK, or California, you have additional rights under GDPR / UK-GDPR / CCPA respectively, including the right to know, the right to delete, and the right to non-discrimination. You can exercise these rights by emailing support@subtextapp.io.

Changes to this policy

We will update this policy if our practices change. The "Last updated" date at the top will reflect the latest revision. Significant changes will be notified in-app.
